REGINA - Regina Police Service Traffic Safety Unit is launching an initiative this month where all drivers who are pulled over will have to blow into a breathalyzer.
According to their news release, as of March 1, officers in the RPS Traffic Safety Unit will require all drivers to take a roadside Mandatory Alcohol Screening test when pulled over.
This would apply to traffic stops for any driving infractions including speeding, rolling stops, or ensuring the driver has a license.
Drivers who pass the roadside test will be rewarded with a smile and a gift certificate for coffee, courtesy of SGI and Regina Police Service.
According to the police service, the federal law that gives police this right took effect in 2018, but “many drivers our officers encounter aren’t aware they are required to comply with a demand for the quick breath test, and they potentially face serious penalties for refusal.”
