REGINA - Another lengthy day of business is expected at Wednesday's Regina city council meeting including a return of the homeless issue to discussion.
One of the major items council is set to consider is a motion on declaring a houselessness emergency in the City of Regina, which was the subject of the notice of motion that came forward at the previous council meeting in August that had been supported by four councillors: Shanon Zachidniak, Cheryl Stadnichuk, Andrew Stevens and Dan LeBlanc.
A total of nine delegations have registered to either make presentations or provide written statements on the houselessness emergency motion.
Also on the agenda is another motion regarding written notice of special city council meetings, a motion also supported by the same four councillors. This is being brought forward in the aftermath of the special meeting called in July regarding the homeless encampment in front of City Hall, which ended up not going ahead due to a lack of quorum. The encampment ended up being cleared that same day by order of Regina Fire Department.
A number of other items are on the agenda, including discussion of the 2023 mid-year forecast report.
The council meeting convened at 1:05 p.m. and among the items dealt with so far has been a recommendation on the Saskatchewan Drive Corridor Plan, the city's plan to revitalize that important corridor running through central Regina.
After hearing concerns that there might not have been enough consultation, council voted in favor of a referral motion to refer the report back to administration to conduct further consultation with landowners and interested stakeholders. The motion calls for administration to report back in the second quarter of 2024.
Council also voted unanimously in favor of an out of country trip by Mayor Sandra Masters and Councillor John Findura to Warsaw, Poland on a recruitment mission to attract skilled workers. Their trip is being covered 100 per cent by the province.
Council has just wrapped up discussion of a recommendation approved at Executive Committee last week directing administration to bring forward reports every two years related to the Lead Service Connection Management Program. That has carried by a vote of 6 to 3.
