Greg Lawrence not running again in Moose Jaw Wakamow

Lawrence cites injuries sustained in motorcycle accident as reason for stepping away from politics.

REGINA - Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence has become the latest to announce he is not running again in 2024.

Lawrence, MLA since 2011, confirmed he is not seeking re-election in a news release from the Saskatchewan Party on Tuesday. 

It was known that Lawrence was facing a potential nomination challenge and likely a competitive election race after that in 2024, but the indication was that he was intent on running again. 

However, those plans have changed. In a statement Tuesday, Lawrence cites the injuries he sustained in a recent motorcycle accident as the reason why he is stepping away.

“I had planned to run again, but after sustaining serious injuries in a motorcycle accident last month, my recovery has been more challenging than I expected. I need to focus on my health and rehabilitation and that’s why I have decided not to seek reelection,” Lawrence said.

“I want to thank the people of Moose Jaw Wakamow for electing me as their MLA three times and assure them that my constituency office remains open and I continue to serve my constituents even as I recover from the accident. It has been the honour of my lifetime to serve you and I will continue doing so until the election next year.”

Premier Scott Moe has issued a statement thanking Lawrence for his years of service.

“I want to thank my friend Greg for his 12 years of dedicated service to the people of Moose Jaw and the province of Saskatchewan,” Moe said. 

A date has not been confirmed for a Sask Party nominating meeting in Moose Jaw Wakamow, however the party says one will be held in the coming months.
