Blast from the Past: Meals on Wheels starts in Wilkie for $1/day

With 11 participants, the "Meals on Wheels" program was established with help from volunteers and a government grant 50 years ago.

50 years ago

The Wilkie Hospital Auxiliary announced they would be starting a “Meals on Wheels” program to “insure one nutritious meal a day to participants.” Eleven people had already said they wished to participate in the program. Cost would be only $1 per meal, thanks to a government grant and volunteer drivers.

New Luseland pilots receiving their graduated private pilot licences were Jim Culp, Veryl Osterhold, Ray Scheidt, Greg Scheidt, George Elliot, Frances Scheck, Donna Young, Clarence Weybrecht, Mark Simonson and Wayne Bird.

The Unity United Church women’s group was planning a fashion show featuring wedding gowns of the past 50 years.

Gerry Cey of Wilkie was named MVP of the Wild Goose Hockey League for the 1974-75 season.

20 years ago

Gordon and Juanita Hawkins, who farmed near Wilkie, were among 10 farmers from across Western Canada recognized by the Canadian Wheat Board as Master Growers. The Hawkins were acclaimed for their malting barley.

A bull owned by Ayrey Farms at Evesham won Grand Champion Horned Hereford at the Pride of the Prairies Bulls Sale in Lloydminster.

The Luseland Mallards held their annual awards night, where Davin Heintz was voted MVP, Lane Wooster was Best Rookie, Darrell Kraft Best Defenceman and Chad Walz Most Sportsmanlike.

Some 250 people came out for the second annual Good Friday Way of the Cross walk in Unity.

Wilkie Outlaws MVP for the year was Jason Halter. Fans voted for Matt Frehlich as the Most Popular Player.
