50 years ago: Unity United Church sent five women to conference in Banff

A major unexpected and unwelcome change to downtown Wilkie took place in November, 1973, when the Robinson Store, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Merle Rivett, burnt to the ground.

50 years ago

Along with the building and a large inventory of merchandise, including Christmas items, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Rivett lost their accounts receivable records in the Robinson Store fire. “The co-operation of … patrons [was] urged so that losses in this regard can be held to a minimum, if any.”

Don Robertson was introduced as Unity’s new recreation director.

Unity Agricultural Society held their fall fair Oct. 27, with Walter Zunti of Luseland winning the trophy for Grains and Grasses.

Mrs. Eileen Quick, Mrs. Maud Brown, Mrs. Anne Rutledge, Mrs. Carole Sego and Mrs. Della Weeks attended the United Church Women’s conference held in Banff, Alta.

20 years ago

RM of Reford election results were: councillor division 2 – Lorne Sittler; councillor division 4 – Louis Thomas; councillor division 6 – Eugene Hartter; all by acclamation.

Wilkie’s Jared Keller, Derek Keller, Bobby Bachman, Russell Nielsen and Ricky Cey were all playing for the AAA North Battleford North Stars midget team, and all five of them picked up some points in the first 12 games of the season.

Carey Baker and Brenda Kreimeier conducted a traffic count at the intersection of Highways 14 and 21. Coming from the north were 1,432 vehicles, 1,035 from the west, 886 from the east and 460 from the south.
