As you may know, September is Muscular Dystrophy Awareness month. This past weekend, those affected by neuromuscular disorders joined their family and friends in the 10th Annual Walk4MD including our ambassador, 17 year old Quinn Wilton.

As you may know, September is Muscular Dystrophy Awareness month. This past weekend, those affected by neuromuscular disorders joined their family and friends in the 10th Annual Walk4MD including our ambassador, 17 year old Quinn Wilton.

Moving from Kipling to attend the University of Saskatchewan this fall to pursue a degree in Social Work can be a difficult transition for anyone, but when you have Muscular Dystrophy, those challenges are amplified.

In 2009 both Quinn and her brother Luke were diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) which primarily affects the face, shoulders and upper arm strength. Eventually she will need help with the basics of life including hair washing and grocery shopping.

Despite daily obstacles, Quinn leads a very active life. She was on the Student Leadership Council at her high school, she worked part-time at a local daycare, and continues to dance competitively and helping out on her family’s grain farm. Quinn says “I am fortunate to not currently require the assistance provided by Muscular Dystrophy Canada but am very grateful to know that they are a resource for myself and my family for my future needs.â€

Muscular Dystrophy is currently an incurable disease and in addition to providing equipment and services to our clients, we are in the relentless pursuit of a cure.

The Walk4MD was held at Rick Hansen Optimist Park on Sunday, September 17.
