A Wahpeton Dakota man who was released on bail in May on murder charges has been remanded back in custody.

Nathan Waditaka, 19, was arrested in December 2019 and charged with the second-degree murder of a man and aggravated and sexual assault against a minor female.

Waditaka appeared in Prince Albert Court of Queen’s bench May 26 and was released on bail with strict conditions, including wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet, remaining in the house 24-hours a day unless otherwise allowed to leave by his probation officer, and not going to Wahpeton Dakota Nation or Prince Albert. He was also ordered not to contact certain individuals, whose names are protected under a publication ban.

The charges against Waditaka stem from an incident last year when the Prince Albert RCMP were called to the Wahpeton Dakota Nation Health Centre shortly after midnight on Dec. 26, 2019, about a complaint that a girl was assaulted. She was taken by ambulance to a Prince Albert hospital for treatment of her injuries. Also at that residence police found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a local clinic and pronounced deceased by EMS. 

Police identified Waditaka as the suspect and arrested him at a nearby residence. Police say Waditaka sustained injuries during the assault and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Prince Albert for treatment. 

The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime Unit – North, the Saskatchewan Coroners Service and the Saskatchewan RCMP General Investigation Section – Saskatoon assisted with the investigation.

Waditaka had a court appearance in Prince Albert Provincial Court July 2 and he was remanded in custody. The court has imposed a ban on publication on details that may identify the victims.

Waditaka is now scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court July 23 to elect how he wants to be tried.
