Two men pursued by Alberta and Saskatchewan RCMP after a shooting in Onion Lake and then carjackings and shots fired in Lloydminster are trying to get out on bail.
Lucas Aaron Oakes, 24, and Jesse Leigh Heathen, 33, had bail hearings in Lloydminster Provincial Court Aug. 17 but were remanded back in custody.
Oakes and Heathen, along with Montana Horse, 21, were arrested July 29. Both Oakes, from Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, and Heathen from Lloydminster, were charged with theft of a truck robbery using a firearm, discharge of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, assault, uttering threats and flight from police. Heathen was charged with several more offences and Oakes was charged with 15 additional offences, including seven charges in connection to the Onion Lake shooting.
Horse, of Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of failing to comply with conditions.
According to police, it all started around 5 p.m. on July 29 when RCMP found a man who was shot on Onion Lake Cree Nation, Sask. He was taken to hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries.
The suspects in a vehicle were soon spotted 30 kilometres south in Lloydminster, Alta. RCMP started to pursue the vehicle but called off the chase due to public safety concerns.
About an hour later a vehicle collided with another vehicle on 46 Avenue in Lloydminster, Sask. Lloydminster is a small border city that sits on both Alberta and Saskatchewan. Two men pointed a firearm at someone in a truck and tried to steal the vehicle. They were unsuccessful and fled on foot.
Minutes later, the armed suspects fired two shots at someone inside a car and tried to steal the vehicle. The driver drove off to safety.
But the suspects then assaulted a third victim and stole a truck. Lloydminster RCMP pursued the vehicle, however, they called off the chase after the stolen truck veered into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes of Highway 16.
Shortly before 7 p.m. Maidstone, Sask., RCMP responded to a report of a stolen truck near the junction of Highway 16 and Highway 303. The truck was later located in Lloydminster and police arrested Horse in the area.
Half an hour later Maidstone RCMP got another call about a truck with two men that was stuck near Hillmond. When police arrived the men had already fled but they were arrested while walking on a nearby road.
Horse was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Sept. 14.
Heathen was also charged in connection to a home invastion on Ministikwan First Nation in December 2018. In July 2019, the matter was sent to Battelfords Court of Queen's Bench for trial but the Crown prosecutor in Meadow Lake issued a stay of proceedings on March 26, 2020.
Show cause hearings for Oakes and Heathen continue in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Aug. 24.
