An Onion Lake man charged with killing another Onion Lake man elected to have a trial by judge and jury this fall.

Dakota Dean Whitstone, 22, is charged in connection to a 2018 murder.

Whitstone was released on bail while waiting for his trial on the second-degree murder charge. But Alberta RCMP arrested him for firearms-related offences on Kehewin Cree Nation, Alta., on Feb. 29, 2020.

On the two Alberta firearms charges, Whitstone was sentenced to two jail terms of 120 days each.

Whitstone is now in custody while waiting for his trial on the second-degree murder charge out of Onion Lake.

The murder charge stems from an incident on Aug. 11, 2018 when police were called to a home on Onion Lake. They found Tyson Blair Crosschild, 30, in medical distress. Police and medical personnel performed life-saving measures but Crosschild was later pronounced deceased at a hospital.

Whitstone was arrested in August 2018 and charged with second-degree murder and two counts of breach of recognizance.

His trial is set in Battlefords Court of Queen’s Bench from Sept. 21 to Oct. 2.
