WEYBURN - The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) experienced a busy week responding to 91 calls for service during the week of August 14 to 20, resulting in a total of 58 charges. Of the charges, 24 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 26 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), four under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), and four under other Provincial Acts or Regulations.
Of the 24 criminal charges, five were related to individuals who either failed to appear in court as required or failed to comply with a condition of their release.
The week was busy in relation to traffic safety as well as calls of a criminal nature. During the week, 26 tickets were issued for infractions under the TSA. The majority of TSA infractions were in relation to drivers who were speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt, using a cell phone while driving, or driving an unregistered vehicle. Late Wednesday night (very early morning hours of Thursday), the Weyburn Police Service was notified of an erratic driver heading toward the city at a very high rate of speed. The notification included a description of the vehicle and indicated that the driver may be impaired. An officer on patrol spotted the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop resulting in the adult male driver being charged with impaired driving as well as dangerous driving.
On Saturday morning, an alert officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle pulling a trailer that matched the description of a trailer that was recently reported stolen. Not only was the trailer confirmed to be stolen, but the two adult male occupants of the vehicle were found to be in possession of a firearm and a controlled substance, as well as being in breach of several of their release conditions. The two males were arrested, charged, and held in custody to appear in court.
Late Saturday night, officers responded to an incident involving a group of youth who were gathered in a parking lot. One of the youth reportedly tampered with another individual’s vehicle and then later assaulted the individual by punching him. Officers spoke to the parties involved and the matter was resolved alternatively.
The Weyburn Police Service also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
