MEADOW LAKE – Three people charged with second-degree murder in the death of 36-year-old Jeremy Ernest will stand trial in Battleford Court of King’s Bench.
A preliminary hearing for 32-year-old Trevor Alexander of Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, 29-year-old Hannah Durocher of Eagles Lake, and 34-year-old Tyson Lasas of Waterhen Lake First Nation, was held on Oct. 13 in Meadow Lake Provincial Court.
Earlier this year, a fourth accused, 24-year-old Tasha Opikokew of Battleford, was committed to stand trial on a charge of accessory to murder.
Meadow Lake RCMP say that Ernest was murdered on Waterhen Lake First Nation on Nov. 12, 2022. Police and paramedics had been called to a home at about 4:30 a.m. and found Ernest injured. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
At the time of Ernest’s murder, Alexander was wanted by Beauval RCMP for incidents that occurred between Aug. 31 and Sept. 6, 2022, on Canoe Lake Cree First Nation. Police had released his photo to the public and issued a warrant for his arrest on 22 firearms-related offences, forcible confinement, assault, six counts of uttering threats, sexual assault, criminal harassment, driving while prohibited and dangerous driving.
The North Battleford RCMP gang unit went to Meadow Lake to search for Alexander and determined that he was at a home in the Eagles Lake area. Police arrested him and three other people. The four were wanted on warrants by Saskatchewan RCMP and three days later RCMP Major Crimes charged them with Ernest’s murder.
