Regina couple appear on weapons, confinement charges

Provincial court heard victim assaulted with a shotgun.

REGINA – A couple appeared in court this morning, related to a reported firearms offence police dealt with over the weekend.

A police operation occurred on April 21 in the 1200 block of Retallack Street. On Friday afternoon, police informed the public of the operation, asking people to avoid the area

"Police are asking the public to avoid the 1200 Block Retallack Street as a police operation is underway," said RPS in a media relase last week. "Motorists and pedestrians are asked to choose another route; those in the area are advised to shelter in place."

A male and female were arrested as a result, appearing by phone in Regina Provincial Court on April 24.

Owen Burhof, 36, was charged with two counts possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order; and single counts forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, discharge a firearm in a reckless manner, uttering death threats, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, careless storage of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a scheduled substance.

Co-accused Jessica Cyr, 33, was charged with forcible confinement and assault with a weapon.

In court, the Crown was opposed to the release of Burhof and Cyr, placing both on no-contact orders with each other and the complainant.

Court also heard that the assault on the victim was with a sawed off shotgun, and Burhof objected to some unrelated - but quite serious - charges that were also presented.

“I’m getting royally screwed in the end,” he said. “I need a lawyer really bad on this.”

Both accused are seeking the assistance of Legal Aid, and their next court appearance will be April 28.
