SASKATOON – A former Saskatoon realtor facing 17 mortgage fraud charges will have a preliminary hearing in September to determine if there is enough evidence for him to stand trial. Case management is scheduled for June 7 in Saskatoon Provincial Court.
In March 2023, Kamanashis Deb, now 44, was arrested following a two-year investigation by Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) Economic Crime Section.
In January 2023, his brother, Debasahis Deb, now 35, turned himself in at SPS Headquarters. He is back in court June 24 to enter an election.
On March 1, 2021, police had received a report about falsified banking documents that were submitted with several mortgage applications in Saskatoon. Police traced the documents back to mortgages submitted by two Saskatoon realtors.
There were eight mortgage applications with false documents at one financial institution, say police.
The Saskatoon Police Service Economic Crime Section executed search warrants in the 200 block of Palliser Court, 3400 block of McClocklin Road, and the 1100 block of 8th Street East. The search warrants resulted in the seizure of more fraudulent documents connected to mortgage applications at several other financial institutions.
According to the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce’s website, Kamanashis Deb ran for their 2020-21 board of directors. His campaign posters said he was an entrepreneur, real estate agent, and Saskatoon-based small business owner.
“Since arriving in Saskatoon in 2008 with just $20 in my pocket, I’ve become an experienced entrepreneur,” Kamanashis Deb said on his election campaign poster.
“I’ve achieved business success in Saskatoon and beyond, as highlighted in the Star-Phoenix, my ‘work ethic hasn’t gone unnoticed,’” he continued.
“Since 2013, I’ve been a top selling real estate associate for Royal Lepage and earned Royal Lepage’s national award of excellence in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019," Kamanashis Deb said on his election campaign poster.
The charges haven't been tested in court.
