Man gets two life sentences for 2021 double murder on James Smith CN

He shot and killed two people, shot and wounded a third person, and shot at two more people but missed.

MELFORT – James Smith Cree Nation man Shawn Bernard Moostoos has been convicted of a double murder and an attempted murder. Charges of shooting at two more people were stayed.

Moostoos, now, 36, pleaded guilty in Melfort Court of King’s Bench April 29 to two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of 37-year-old Cassidy Moostoos and 27-year-old Demetri Head.

He also pleaded guilty to attempted murder of a third person, who has the same last name as him.

Two more people at the home, with the same last name as Moostoos, were shot at but weren’t struck by bullets, according to court documents.

He was handed two life sentences, concurrent to each other, on two second-degree murder charges, and 10 years concurrent for an attempted murder charge. He won't be eligible for parole for 16 years.

Moostoos was initially charged with two counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm with intent to danger two additional peoples’ lives.

Three people were shot during an altercation at the home on James Smith Cree Nation on Sept. 5, 2021.

After police had responded to the home, they issued an emergency alert to the public in the area telling them they were searching for 33-year-old Shawn Moostoos. They advised people to shelter in place, not to leave a secure location, don’t answer their door unless police provided direction to do so, and to stay away from windows.
