Over the weekend, 1,816 northern Manitobans were considered as active COVID-19 cases.

On Monday, thanks to a jump in validating old COVID-19 cases as recovered, that number dropped to 718.

The drop is due to data for cases in several remote communities being validated, following weeks-long delays by the province in having cases from remote communities marked as 鈥渞ecovered鈥�.听

The change meant dramatic case drops in some regions that have been hit hard by COVID-19. For instance, the Shamattawa/York Factory/Tataskweyak/Split Lake district, which was listed as having 372 active cases Feb. 7, dropped down to only 34 active cases a day later due to the data being validated. The Island Lake district, which stands as the hardest-hit district in northern Manitoba, also dropped overnight from 811 cases to 397 Feb. 8. The Pas/OCN/Kelsey also saw a dramatic change, going from 74 cases considered active Feb. 8 to 15 cases a day later.

Manitoba chief provincial public health officer announced the data correction Feb. 8, stating that the change was down to both health officials being able to close cases and due to Manitobans following health orders designed to contain spread.

鈥淲e continue to make updates on our active case numbers. We have been reviewing older cases and we鈥檝e been able to close a number of the active cases - you鈥檒l notice a significant drop in the total of active cases,鈥� said Roussin.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 both in total and the numbers of people in hospital.鈥�

The number of cases now active in Manitoba is down to 1,622, with only 53 new cases found province-wide and 12 new cases found in the north.

鈥淥ur numbers today are trending in the right direction. These numbers are the lowest we鈥檝e seen since the fall. ICU numbers are the lowest they鈥檝e been since late November. This is all a result of the work of Manitobans,鈥� Roussin said.听

鈥淲e can see that the restrictions that we have in place are quite tough, they affect Manitobans to different degrees, but they are working. The numbers show us that they are effective, they鈥檙e working and it鈥檚 put Manitobans back in a position to continue to our slow, cautious reopening.鈥�

Flin Flon district

The data correction meant little change for the Flin Flon/Snow Lake/Cranberry Portage/Sherridon district. The district now has two active cases of COVID-19, down from 20 in mid-January and from three cases as of Feb. 8.

However, the district reported its second death connected to COVID-19 over the weekend. The death, first announced Feb. 6, was added to the provincial COVID-19 dashboard a day later. According to a provincial announcement, the person who died is an unidentified woman in her 50s.

Another two deaths from COVID-19 were also reported in northern Manitoba, along with the correction in case data. One death was reported in the Shamattawa district, while another death was reported in The Pas/OCN/Kelsey. Provincial reports state that two more people - a woman in her 60s and another woman in her 70s - died from COVID-19 in the north as of Feb. 8, but it is unknown which person was in which region.
