YORKTON - About 30 people were signed up for hour-long tours of the Yorkton Water Treatment Plant on Queen Street.
Connor Hunt – Director of Environmental Services, with the city said during the recent 2025 budget process by the city there were some questions regarding the water utility. He said it was felt they needed to do a better job of having a dialogue with citizens about the city’s water, and the tours Saturday were a first step in that process.
“It is a way to start the engagement,” he said.
Having 30 sign up while not huge numbers were certainly better than they thought would have enough interest to take part in an hour-long walk through of the facility on a Saturday, said Hunt.
The water treatment plant tour was also a sort precursor to a tour of the H.M. Bailey Water Pollution Control Plant set for Saturday, June 7.
Hunt said with the city currently developing plans to build a replacement facility interest in that side of the utility is high, and he hopes the June event will help participants better understand exactly what takes place at the facility and why.
The June tour will also be a chance “to highlight the age of the facility,” now nearing 35 years across much of the plant, and what challenges that creates in terms of meeting current provincial regulations which he added are “the necessity for the new plant.”
