YORKTON - The Yorkton Kinsmen Maulers wound up their 2024-25 Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League season hosting the Saskatoon Blazers for a pair of weekend games.
Saturday the Blazers started things at the Westland Insurance Arena with goals by Cooper Ernewein and Corban Alman for an early 2-0 lead.
Meric Ponelet with an even-strength effort and Tanner Wiens with a powerplay goal tied things for the Maulers.
However, a late first period effort by Kash Ringdal gave Saskatoon a slim one goal margin through 20-minutes of play, up 3-2.
A scoreless second period changed nothing.
In the third period Blake Chorney gave the Blazers a 4-2 lead.
Brady Simpson gave the home side hope with a goal to make it 4-3.
A goal by Shaan Basran with one second left rounded out a 5-3 Saskatoon win.
Reid Schweitzer faced 39-shots in the loss for Yorkton, while Reid Wassermann faced 30 in the Blazer nets.
The teams were back in action Sunday afternoon, and again Saskatoon took the early 2-0 lead on goals by Blake Chorney and Troy Shewchuk.
A late goal by Ryder Woods put Yorkton on the board making it 2-1 through the opening 20-minutes.
Than Hamilton made it 3-1 for Saskatoon.
Kieran Sobrey responded for the Maulers making it 3-2.
Ryder McKinnin scored making it 4-2 Saskatoon.
Ethan Hamilton responded for Yorkton making it 4-3 as the teams headed to the third period.
In final regulation period of the season Brady Simpson scored to tie things 4-4, and then a goal by Aidan Vallance gave the Maulers their first lead of the contest 5-4.
An empty-net effort by Vallance rounded put a 6-4 Mauler win.
Madex Kabrud took the loss in the Blazer net facing 42-shots, while Casson Ailbernagel took the win for Yorkton facing 32-shots.
The weekend split left saw Yorkton finish the season campaign with a record of 11-32-1 and 23 points and 11th spot in the league, better only than the Notre Dame with 13.
