Yorkton high school soccer teams in action on home pitches

Both Yorkton teams did well on Saturday.

YORKTON - High school soccer action took to two pitches in Yorkton on Saturday.

The Sacred Heart Saints boys team played their opening two games of the 2024 Moose Jaw Boys Soccer League against Moose Jaw Peacock/Cornerstone, winning that opener 16-0.

In the second game of the day the Saints faced Moose Jaw Central Collegiate, winning a very tight match with a score of 2-1.

The Saints are coming off of a successful 2023 campaign that saw them winning their Regional Championship and Provincial Championship.

The Saints team remains highly competitive this year and is hoping to have an equally successful 2024 season, said coach Sebastian Prost.

“I am extremely impressed with this group of players, who have once again shown this weekend that they possess the skill, grit, and determination to win difficult games that could easily tip either way,” he said.

Meanwhile the Yorkton Regional High School boy’s were in action at Logan Green.

The YRHS Raiders won their first against Moose Jaw Central 5-2 and then made it two-for-two topping Moose Jaw Peacock 6-3.

“It was a great start to the season and the work towards our goal of adding only the third provincial medal in YRHS boys soccer history,” said Raider coach Steven DeLong.

Colby Halliday, Maddon McCombs, Grady Halyk, Abdullah Shakeel and Eltaf Rezaee all contributed with goals this weekend while Xander Thompson, Dmytro Kolesnyk, Jaxon Witherspoon and Daxton Davis all had solid defensive performances.

“Seth Malcolm stood tall in our net making some timely saves and overall, all of the boys contributed to a perfect start,” added DeLong.

“Next weekend YRHS takes on Notre Dame and Weyburn in Moose Jaw Saturday.
