YORKTON – The Sacred Heart Saints football team hosted the Melville Cobras Sept. 14 losing 51–19.
"We're young this year — we don't have a lot of returning grade 12s — the core of our group is young," said Saints' Head Coach Garrett Karcha in an interview with Yorkton This Week, adding, "this year is a major growth year ... and just trying to build for the future as we always are."
"We have a lot of raw talent — kids that are trying football for the first time — a lot of it comes down to being at practice and just learning the game," said Karcha.
Karcha noted that it's still early in the season and there is time for improvement.
"Last year — I guess you could say every year with Sacred Heart's football — we definitely improve throughout the season and play our best football at the end of the year," said Karcha, "we just hope to grow and develop and continue to work on those fundamentals as the season goes on."
"It's tough to say after an exhibition game and a regular season game but I think that what I like about our team is just the result — the kids are having fun — they're enjoying themselves and they're enjoying the sport so I would like to say we work as a team and play as a team," said Karcha of the team's strength.
"In terms of an individual strength I think our defence is definitely something we're going to have to hold on to — I think they're getting better and we have more returning players on the defensive side than we do on offence," said Karcha.
"We put three touchdowns up — almost in a row — at the end," said Karcha, "we improved as the game went on ... we definitely had a good finish to the game but we had a couple turnovers early with fumbles and stuff and that just sank us quick."
"It just wasn't a good start."
