MELVILLE - Melville residents may have noticed an increased police presence on roadways in their community on May 31.
Melville RCMP and Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS), along with Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch, partnered with Students Against Drinking and Driving (SADD) to work in the community, specifically on Highway 10 and Queen Street in Melville. This focus of this dedicated traffic stop was to identify drivers impaired by drugs and/or alcohol.
Within eight minutes, the officers arrested a 65-year-old male and charged him with one count, operation while impaired, Section 320.14 (1), Criminal Code and one count, operation with over 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, Section 320.14(b), Criminal Code. The next driver, an adult male, was issued a three-day licence suspension after officers determined he’d used cannabis before driving.
“Dedicated traffic enforcement initiatives like the one held last week are imperative in keeping impaired drivers off Saskatchewan roadways,” says S/Sgt. Travis Adams, Melville RCMP’s detachment commander. “Just eight minutes into our check stop, our officers removed an impaired driver from the road. There are so many options available to find a safe ride home – there is really no excuse.”
