Gordon Toth of Yorkton, formerly of Saltcoats, passed away, peacefully on November 9, 2011. He was 98 years of age. Gordon was born in the Jedburg area on January 26, 1913 to John and Julia Toth (nee Kish). He attended Junior School. However, his formal education was interrupted early, as all "able hands" were required to help operate the family farm. Gordon was a "tinkerer", able to fix anything that might break down. This natural mechanical ability served him well throughout his entire life. Being able to fix his own machinery saved many an hour of non-production. Gordon married Margaret Toth on November 10, 1938. In 1940, along with their infant daughter Margaret, they moved to a 1/2 section of land in the Graham district, near Saltcoats. Farming was not just a way to earn a living or a way of life, for Gordon, it was a passion. He loved to see his crops grow and flourish. He was always working on ways to improve the yield. He was an active member of the community and was always willing to lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need. Gordon and Margaret loved attending community dances. Gordon enjoyed curling. He and his teammates participated in numerous bonspiels through the winters, often bringing home prizes. Gordon and Margaret farmed until their retirement in 1989, when they moved into their home in Yorkton. Gordon continued to "tinker" in his workshop in the backyard, creating many useful and inventive "gadgets". He loved gardening and was especially proud of his apple trees. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret, his five children; Margaret (Robert) Halliday of Rokeby, Marjorie (Mervin) Niefer of Saltcoats, Marleen (Donald) Brock of Manitou Beach, Merlin Toth of Yorkton, Monica (Curtis) Krassman of Regina; fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. A Celebration of his Life will take place at a later date.
