Mr. George Tkachuk of Yorkton passed away peacefully, Wednesday, October 12, in Palliative Care at the Yorkton Union Hospital. He had celebrated his 93rd birthday with his family & friends while in the hospital. George was born on September 26, 1923 on a farm near Playmore, SK to Steve and Rose (nee Fedoruk) (Dmetriuk). George was united in marriage to Alice Zaharia on July 20, 1952. During their marriage they were blessed with two daughters and one son. George had a few different jobs during his lifetime but his primary one was with the Dairy Producers where he began delivering milk in glass bottles driving a horse drawn wagon. He received a gold watch for 25 years of service, which he cherished to his dying day. George retired from the Dairy Producers after 28 years of service. George and his late wife, Alice, were members of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church. They volunteered for many fund raising events and hall functions. George also volunteered with the Yorkton Terriers hockey club. He loved going to dances and playing cards with family and friends. After retirement, George kept busy roto-tilling gardens and snowblowing. He loved to watch his favourite sports teams: Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays. You could often find a bottle of Pepsi, black licorice candy or donuts by his favourite chair. George suffered a major stroke in January 1990. He was taken to Saskatoon Parkridge Centre where he relearned to talk and walk with a cane. Nothing could slow him down after that. "Scooter" George went for coffee nearly every morning, rain or shine, to the Parkland Mall where he met many friends. In the last few years, he attended the Lions Wellness Centre where he met more new friends. George was predeceased by his wife Alice; parents Steve & Rose; Sam & Katie Zaharia; step-father John Dmetriuk; brother John; step-sister Adrianne Beaton and in-laws Harold, Connie, Helen, Jane, Thelma, Keith, Donald & Peter. George is survived by his children Judy (Les) Reimer, Shelley (Garry) Miller and Allen; grand-children Heather, Mark, Melissa (Colby), Tyler, Julia and Reese; great-granddaughter Hannah; sisters Marion Petrescue, Anne Boychuk; in-laws Ethel Tkachuk, Mike Zaharia, Diane Shorter and Carol Brown; plus numerous nieces and nephews. George had a strong will and always found a way to get things done. The light in his window and his watchful eye will be missed by his neighbours. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, October 21, 2016 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Father Rod Luciuk of St. Mark's Orthodox Church officiating. The cantor was Father Vlad Lysak. The interment took place at Yorkton City Cemetery with Les Reimer, Garry Miller, Mark Reimer, Tyler Gelowitz, Mervin Adam and Colby Beierle serving as the casket bearers.
