A. Marian Slater passed away on May 1, 2012, in the Russell Hospital at the age of 94 yrs. She was born Aug. 21, 1917 on the family farm near Binscarth, MB. Marian was predeceased by her parents Wilber and Winnifred (nee Fraser) Rice, husband, John Hubert Slater, two brothers; Glen (Dorothy Porter), Jimmy (Muriel Fortune), and sister Jean (Mel) Peterson. After attending Binscarth School Marian went to nursing school in Kenora, ON. where she met her future husband, John. She graduated in 1941 and nursed in Pine Falls, ON. and Edmonton, AB. John and Marian were married in 1942, and she moved to Halifax, NS. where he was stationed. She worked at the Gen. Hospital until 1945, when the war ended and John was discharged. They moved to the Binscarth farm, where Marian worked part-time at the Russell Hospital. Their son Ross was born in 1946 in Russell. In 1958 they moved to Shoal Lake, MB. where Marian worked as Matron/Administrator. She retired to Binscarth in the mid 80's. Her main job after retirement was to look after and care for the elderly. Marian loved her bridge and taught bridge lessons to all that were interested. She also loved knitting, gardening, golfing and curling. She belonged to the church all her life, teaching Sunday School and CGIT, and singing in the choir. She leaves to mourn her son Ross (Holly) Slater of Yorkton, six grandchildren; Shauna (Mike) Prokopetz, Sean (Launa), Shannon, and Shane all of Regina, and Fred and Silken Slater of Yorkton, as well as 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends. The funeral service was held on Saturday, May 12, 2012 from the Knox United Church, Binscarth, with Jamie Bradshaw officiating. Interment followed in the Binscarth Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Braendle-Bruce Funeral Service of Russell was in care of arrangements.
