Mary Schurko

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mrs. Mary Schurko of Yorkton, beloved wife of William Schurko, on January 12, 2017, at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home, at the age of 97 years. Mary was born October 4, 1919, on the family farm in the Beaverdale District. She was the second of 9 children born to Marcella and John.  Her siblings were Katie, John, Annie, Rose, Nellie, Fred, Helen, and Irene. On October 18, 1941, Mary married William Schurko. They farmed in the Willowbrook area and raised their family of three children - Doreen, Bruce and Tom. Mary worked tirelessly building the homestead with William. She took care of the house and children as well as tended a huge garden, small livestock, and preserved and canned food for winter meals.  She loved to tend to her garden, flowers, and had a well-kept yard. William and Mary moved to Yorkton in 1972. Mary worked at Weber's, Safeway, and York Beverages. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and garden, playing cards, cooking and canning, knitting, crocheting, Ukrainian music, and puzzles. She did not want to miss her T.V. programs such as Wheel of Fortune, Price is Right, and Jeopardy. She also enjoyed travelling with Katie, Sylvia and Marcella, Fred and Polly, and Tom and Merle.  Mary always enjoyed visits from family and friends. She was a kind and generous person who went out of her way to make people feel welcome and always wanted photos to remember the occasions. Mary was predeceased by her husband William in 1975, her parents Marcella & John, siblings: Rose, John, Annie and Nellie, brother-in-laws Walter Maduck, Wally Mudray, Neil Knight, Louie Balaberda, and sister-in-law Kate Lees. Mary leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Doreen (Jim) and their children Tracy and Sheri (Shane); son Bruce (Joanne) and their son Kyle (Tammy) and their children Caden, Halle, and Jack; and son Tom (Merle) and their children Darren (Catrina) and Tanya; along with Mary's siblings Katie Balaberda, Fred (Pauline) Lees, Helen Knight and Irene (Pat) Dunne, and many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Crystal Bailey, Certified Celebrant officiating. The organist & soloist, Amanda Buhler sang the hymns, "In The Garden", "Amazing Grace" and "We'll Meet Again". A Family Tribute was presented by Tanya and Darren Schurko. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Darren Schurko, Tanya Schurko, Catrina Neudeck, Kyle Schurko, Ken Maduck and Colby Lees serving as the casket bearers.  Memorials in memory of Mary may be made to the Alzheimer's Society as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at
