SALAHUB – Wilfred

Posted

Wilfred Salahub

Wilfred Salahub, beloved husband of Betty Salahub of the Kamsack district passed away suddenly but peacefully in his sleep at his home in Kamsack on December 22, 2016 at the age of eighty two. Alfred was born on the family farm near Two Creek School in the Calder District on October 1, 1934. Upon finishing his early education at Two Creek School, Alfred left the farm and began doing carpentry with his uncles George and Steve, building houses on Third Avenue North in Kamsack.  He worked at the Kamsack Creamery for a short time and then moved on to begin his plumbing career with Finnie’s Plumbing in the 1950’s. Alfred met his wife Betty in Kamsack and after dating for three years they were married in 1956. Alfred and Betty began their married life together in Yorkton with Alfred working at Lang’s Plumbing then later Hancock Plumbing as a journeyman plumber and gas fitter for the next 21 years. After starting their family in Yorkton, Alfred decided it was time to return to his roots and purchased their farm south of Kamsack in 1972. Over the next 44 years, Alfred took great pride in building his farming legacy. He was a true farmer at heart, tending to their cattle, pigs, chickens, and geese; building and maintaining his yard and equipment, and was at his happiest working in the field on his favourite tractors. Alfred worked tirelessly to build up his farm, creating a home for his family he was so very proud of. Alfred was a loving and caring husband, father and “Gigi,” and a good friend and neighbour to many. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Betty; his daughter Sandra (Barry) Lakusta of Calgary, AB and their daughter Rachel; his son Craig (Kelly) Salahub of Kamsack, SK and their son Carter and daughter Kira. Also left to mourn Alfred’s passing are his sister Verna (Carl) Spilak of Yorkton, SK; brother Daniel (Linda) Salahub of Duncan, BC; brother Ivan (Joanne) Salahub of Saskatoon, SK and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends and neighbours. Alfred was predeceased by his parents John and Mary (nee Malinosky) Salahub. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Luanne Hrywkiw of Holy Trinity Anglican Church officiating. The organist, Amanda Buhler, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’, ‘Come Ye Thankful People, Come’ and ‘How Great Thou Art.’ Tributes and words of remembrance were shared by Barry Lakusta. Interment followed in the family plot in the Garden of St. John at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Mike Wandy, Ernie Bodnarek, Tim Bodnarek, Clayton Dubnyk, Ken Koroluk and Jody Koroluk serving as the casket bearers. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com. As gifts of remembrance, memorial donations in memory of Wilfred may be made to the Kamsack Hospital Auxiliary or to the Sunrise Health Region towards Medical Imaging Equipment.
