Nick Prokopetz, resident of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home entered eternal rest on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the age of 98 years. Nick Prokopetz was born on April 29, 1913 at Shellmouth, MB; a son of Rose and Pentaly Prokopetz. At a young age his family moved to a farm in the MacNutt district. He attended Clova School until the age of 14, then helped his father on the farm. On November 13, 1937 he was united in marriage to Rose Marteniuk of Calder. They were blessed with two daughters, Gladys and Adelia. Nick worked at the St. Antony Gold Mine in Sudbury, ON, then later sold Watkins products for six years in the Rocanville area. In 1946 they moved to Calder and he started working at the Canadian Consolidated Elevator, which later became the United Grain Growers. He retired from the elevator in 1976. Nick was a devoted member of the St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Calder and then the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. He served on the church board, was a town councillor and Board of Trade member in Calder. Nick's hobbies were curling, gardening, playing cards, watching sports on TV and going for long walks. In 1998 Nick and Rose moved to Yorkton, and in June of 2002, he became a resident of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home where he resided until his passing. He was predeceased by his wife Rose on January 2, 2004; his parents, Pentaly & Rose; stepmother, Katherine; daughter, Gladys Shewchuk on May 28, 2010, and son-in-law, Peter Shewchuk; grandson, Douglas Shewchuk; sisters: Christina and Zenovia in infancy, Marie Zetaruk, Margaret Markowsky, Amy Prope & Louise Smith; brothers, Walter & Mike; and by brothers-in-law, Jack Zetaruk, George Markowsky; Metro & Ken Martin, George, Bill, Nick & Peter Martenuik; sisters-in-law, Helen Scraba & Dora Morash. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter: Adelia (Rodney) Flunder of Churchbridge; five grandchildren: Randall Shewchuk, Russell (Serina) Shewchuk, all of Winnipeg; Darryl (Jody) Flunder of Yorkton, Tracy (Todd) Huckell of Esterhazy, & Crystal (Peter) Berthelette of Winnipeg; eleven great grandchildren: Devon, Brendon, Tyler, Meagan, Sawyere, Shulyre, Sevvryn, Alyssa, Robert, Jagor & Jacoby; a sister: Doris Rankin of Bermuda; sister-in-laws: Lee Prokopetz of Cranbrook, BC and Mary Prokopetz of Porquois Jct, ON; Elsie Martenuik of Calder, Jean Martin of Sudbury & Lena Kozmenuik of Roblin; numerous nieces, nephews, and his many other relatives and friends. Prayer services were held on Monday evening, January 23, 2012 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 24 from Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky as Celebrant. Cantor, Gerald Yaholnitsky, assisted by Parish Choir members, led in the singing of the responses. The crossbearer was Gerald Shymko, the bannerbearers were Ron Scraba and Terry Martenuik. The interment followed in the Garden of Gethsemene at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Darryl Flunder, Todd Huckell, Peter Berthelette, Russell Shewchuk, Randall Shewchuk and Delmar Markosky serving as the casketbearers.
