Melvin Dan Nelson passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 6:30 pm at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. He was 82 years of age when he passed away after a long battle with health issues. Melvin was determined to celebrate his 50th Wedding Anniversary which was that day. A celebration where he was surrounded by family and friends and died shortly after the party ended. Melvin was born to Eric and Fanny (nee Lindquist) Nelson. He was the eleventh of twelve children and he was the second of twin brothers. Melvin and his many siblings were raised on a farm two and a half miles north of Wadena where he remained for most of his life. In 1966 he united in Matrimony to the love of his life Marja Nasholm and they were blessed with two daughters, Marlene and Janet. Melvin was a big man with a kind heart and was always willing to lend a hand to family, friends and neighbours when they needed it the most. Melvin loved farming, fishing, dancing, playing cards and visiting with family, grandchildren and friends. Melvin was predeceased by his parents; an infant brother; his older brothers, Werner and Ken and his older sisters, Alma, Myrtle and Ella. He leaves his wife Marja; his daughters, Marlene and Janet and her husband, Peter; his granddaughter, Terrie and grandson, Brian. He is also survived by his sisters, Ruth, Lilly and Dora and by his twin brother, Mickey and youngest brother, Albert. Melvin will be fondly remembered as a gentle giant who loved to have a good time and a good friend. He will be sadly missed. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from Kopan's Funeral Service, Highway #9 North in Yorkton with Jason E. Kopan serving as the Celebrant. Curtis Brewster and Francis Weber shared their fond memories of Melvin. The musical selections were "Amazing Grace", "How Great Thou Art", "In The Garden" and "Daddy's Hands". The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Peter Lemaire, Brian Lemaire, Brian Weber, Curtis Brewster, Brian Nelson and Gerald Nelson serving as the pall bearers. As an expression of sympathy those wishing to make a charitable contribution in memory of the Late Melvin Nelson may do so with a gift to the Canadian Diabetes Association or to the Saskatchewan Heart & Stroke Foundation.
