Alice Lungul passed away at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on December 10, 2016 at the age of 84 years. Alice was born on June 21, 1932 to John and Annie (Wiwchar) Dutchak on her paternal grandparent's farm in the Buchanan District. That same year her parents purchased their own homestead south-east of Buchanan, SK. Alice attended Gravel Hill School and completed her high school education at Buchanan, SK. She then taught in the Canora School District from 1950-1957 at Stoney View School south of Rama and Black Poplar School near Good Spirit Lake. On July 26, 1953 Alice was united in marriage to Joe Wowchuk and from this union they were blessed with two daughters, Cheryl and Cyndie. Together they farmed on Joe's parent's homestead until Joe's health began to fail. They moved to Canora in 1959 and Joe passed away in 1961. Alice gained employment in the Dietary Department at the Canora Union Hospital in 1960 and worked until 1969. Obtaining her Certified Nursing Assistant Diploma in 1970 she continued working there until 1973. In 1970, Alice married Sam Lungul. Together, in 1974, they purchased and operated the Hyas Hotel. The following year they relocated to Preeceville. In 1981 they purchased the MacNutt Hotel and made their home there until 1985. In 1988 Alice accepted a position as a Food Service Supervisor at the White Spruce Youth Treatment Centre where she continued to work until her retirement in 1993. Retirement allowed her to pursue her hobbies, crocheting, cross stitching, sewing and tending to her garden. She enjoyed canning and freezing the produce for her family and graciously shared the extra with friends and neighbours. Alice also loved to travel and toured Canada from the Pacific to the Atlantic. She joined her daughters travelling abroad, exploring Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii, Cuba and Nevada. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Alice was predeceased by her parents, John and Annie Dutchak; her first husband, Joe Wowchuk in 1961 and second husband, Sam Lungul in 2005; her brothers, Ernest and Alfred; sister-in-law, Blanche Shoesmith and brother-in-law, Gary Dietz. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters: Cheryl and Cyndie Wowchuk; her sister, Dianne Dietz; sister-in-law, Teenie Dutchak and her nieces and nephews: Shawn, Darren (Robyn), Jaxton and Trevor (Amanda) Dietz; Ernie (Kathy), Kim and Adrian Dutchak; Arlene and Sandi (Andy) Alysha and Madisyn Sytsma. In Alice's honour, Funeral Services were celebrated on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 11:30 am from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora, SK with Thom Carnahan officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or to the Yorkton Regional Health Foundation, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Alice Lungul.
