Elsie Leik, February 19, 1920 - July 25, 2012. Elsie in her 92nd year passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on July 25, 2012 at Oliver Lodge in Saskatoon. Elsie was predeceased by her husband, Jack (1986); son, Doug (2008); son, Michael in infancy; one daughter, Torina, also in infancy; and daughter-in-law, Lori. Left to cherish her memory is her sister, Winnifred of Nottingham, England; Elsie's sons: Allan (Glenna) of Bartlesville, OK and their children Jason, Kerri; Jake (Gwen) of Warman, SK and their son Morgan; Rod of Saskatoon, SK and his son Peter; and Darryl (Janelle) of Warman, SK and their children Adam, Ashley; daughter-in-law, Louise Emsley and her children Kim, Jack; and four great grandchildren. Elsie was born on February 19, 1920 to John and Harriet Billings in Nottingham, England, the daughter of a coal miner and one of ten siblings. On September 17, 1943, she was united in marriage to Jacob Leik in England. In February 1946, following the end of the war, Elsie emigrated to Killaly, SK to join her husband, Jack. Elsie traveled numerous days by ship and train to arrive in Melville, SK and there saw her first glimpse of a Saskatchewan winter! They began farming in the Killaly-Neudorf District and were blessed with five sons: Allan, Doug, Jake, Rod and Darryl. In 1967, Elsie and her husband moved to Saltcoats, SK. Elsie managed the family household and took on the challenge of raising five energetic boys. Her Christian faith was very important to her and during the early years, Elsie taught Sunday school lessons and bible study. She was a member of the Saltcoats Anglican Church Women's group and Saltcoats Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and various other community groups. Being a War Bride, Elsie enjoyed many War Bride Conventions and Christmas Parties, and returned three times to England to visit with family. She retained a bit of her British accent throughout her life. In 1998, she decided to move to Saskatoon to be closer to her family. Elsie was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, gardening, knitting, Bingo, cards, jigsaw puzzles and of course, socializing with family and friends. She loved birds and teddy bears and many of these ornaments were on display in her home. In later years, she could always be found in her pink recliner chair with her head buried in a word puzzle book and a handful of Werthers candies close by. Elsie had a caring personality that people were drawn to. She was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone around her. She believed in unconditional love and carried that belief throughout her lifetime. Funeral Service was held on Monday, July 30, 2012 at the Saltcoats Anglican Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at the Saltcoats Town Cemetery.
