Mrs. Alice Kowalishen, formerly of Yorkton and the Stornoway district passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012. She was 93 years of age. Alice (Olesia) was born on November 4, 1918 in Mikado, SK to Michael Guspodaryk and Rosalia Mazur. Alice attended Pretty Valley School near Mikado and business college in Winnipeg. She returned home to help raise her younger siblings with the untimely death of her mother. Alice married John Kowalishen on October 22, 1939 at St. Mary's Church in Yorkton. The couple farmed in the Stornoway district and were blessed with two daughters. In 1962 they moved to Yorkton. She worked at numerous retail outlets and retired after ten years with the Saskatchewan Alcoholism Commission as office manager. Alice and John were members of St. Mary's Church and they will be remembered for her love of music and their cantoring at St. Mary's. Alice resided at Fisher Court for 7 years before entering the Theodore Care Home in March of 2004 due to poor health. Alice was predeceased by her parents, her husband John, and her sisters Ella Pryslak, Anne Scott, Mildred Stabler, Victoria Guspodaric and son-in-law, Allen Kachur. She leaves to mourn her daughters, Gift Kachur and Sonja McAdam: half-brother Victor Guspodaric and step-mother Mary Guspodaric; grandchildren, John (Shelly) Kachur, Payton, Taiya, Darby & Abby; Scott McAdam, Todd (Christine) McAdam and Layton; brothers and sister-in-law Albert Stabler, Emily Derenewski, William and Jean Kowalishen and many nieces and nephews. Prayers were held on Sunday, April 29 at St. Mary's Church preceded by the Holy Rosary led by members of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, April 30 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita & parish choir members. The organist, Ruth McPhee provided the music ministry. The cross bearer was Tamara Morgotch and the epistle reader was John Kachur. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Anton Pryslak, Eugene Pryslak, Victor Guspodaric, Greg Berlinski, Metro Zawada and Leo Misko serving as the casket bearers.
