John Kohut

Mr. John Kohut of Calder passed away peacefully on March 11, 2017 at the Langenburg Care Home following a heroic battle with Dementia. He was 71 years of age. John was born on May 28, 1945 at Queen Victoria Hospital in Yorkton, the first child to Nick and Elsie Kohut (nee Stasko). John was raised on the family farm attended and graduated high school in Calder where very fond memories of classmates and activities were established. John recollected memories and spoke proudly of for as long as he was able. Being part of his curling team, shooting marbles and of course the pretty girls were his favourites. While attending high school, John worked part-time at both the Calder and Wroxton Post Office. After graduation he took a position in management training with Woolworth's which led him to Estevan. John then decided on a career change with Crane Supply, a wholesale plumbing company, which took him to Brandon and eventually to Winnipeg. Starting on the loading dock, John spent the next 36 years with the company working his way to office positions in shipping, sales and preparing quotations. When company downsizing came about, John went to work for the competitor, Emco Supply and on a part-time basis with H & R Block preparing tax returns. This led to John launching his own home based tax service. Upon retirement, John came back to his hometown of Calder. John enjoyed all sports, especially curling, which he continued in his adult life, travelling to bonspiels as far as the U.S. He compiled a collection of music which was also his great enjoyment. John will be remembered for his huge and generous heart, his kind and easygoing personality. His 'never say no' attitude to help with any task and above all that big smile he had for everyone that was lucky enough to cross his path. John was predeceased by his father Nick in 1982 and his mother Elsie in 2016. He leaves to cherish his memory his sister Gloria, brother Carl (Shirley), nephews Brad, Derek (Kenda), their children Brayden, Josh-lynn and Tayja and niece Ashley (Derek). The Funeral Service was held at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre on Friday, March 17, 2017 with Doreen Day, Certified Celebrant officiating. Musical Selections included in the service were "Raining in My Heart", "Are you Mine" and "True Love Ways". The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Ashley Kohut, Tony Katyrynuik, Eugene Katyrynuik, Derek Kohut, Brad Todd and Maryanne Katyrynuik serving as casket bearers. Memorials honouring John's life may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Langenburg Centennial Care Home as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at .
