Larry Hamilton of Yorkton, beloved husband of Gabrielle, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the Yorkton Regional Health Center with family by his side. William Lawrence 'Larry' Hamilton was born April 13, 1933 to Jack and Agnes (nee Martin) Hamilton in Toronto. He attended Morse School in Toronto. After graduating from high school, he moved to Â鶹ÊÓƵ Porcupine, ON. The Dome Mines in Â鶹ÊÓƵ Porcupine provided jobs for the young men, at the same time recruiting them to join their teams as there was much sports competition. Larry became an avid ball player while working at the mines. He later worked at Northern Central Gas until his retirement. While living in Â鶹ÊÓƵ Porcupine, Larry married Orma Cunningham in January, 1955. Larry and Orma had two sons, Bill and Bob. Orma succumbed to cancer on Sept 6, 1995. Larry was a very active and competitive participant in sports such as baseball, hockey and golf. He was a member of the Lions Club & the Legion. He received a Service Award Pin for his many contributory years as a Volunteer Fireman. On December 13, 1997 Larry married Gabrielle (Salyn). In March, 1998 they moved to Yorkton, SK. Larry joined the Roman Catholic Church on April 3, 1999. Father Lorne Crozon was the celebrant at mass and Deacon Urban Kiernan was Larry's sponsor. Larry's church was very important to him. He regularly cantored and sang with the church choir. He volunteered in the Hall activities, was janitor for some time as well as on the properties committee. As a member of the Knights of Columbus he greatly enjoyed the comradeship, the meetings, the barbecues and the setting up in the Hall for the Sunday Brunches. Larry cultivated many friendships with clergy. His spiritual life was deep and tenacious and brought him great comfort. On his deathbed, he prayed the Our Father many times. While in Yorkton, Larry was also involved with the Community Theatre, Passion Play, Legion, golfing, bowling, as well as many other community organizations. He provided transportation for seniors or disabled so they could attend medical appointments or get groceries. Larry particularly enjoyed time spent with family at the lake and car trips in the country. Larry always enjoyed return visits to Ontario to see family and friends, especially in the fall when the leaves turned beautiful fall colors. Larry was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Agnes, by his late wife Orma, and by his two brothers (Mel and Len). He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory his loving wife Gabrielle, his sons Bill of Whitby, ON, and Bob (Lena) of Ancaster, ON and their children Allison, Kris and Jeff of Ottawa. He will also be missed by his extended family: Colleen (Bruce) Monette; Loretta (Dale) Schroh; Greg (Sandi) Salyn; Denise (Bill) Cooper; and Janet Salyn and their families, as well as many, many friends. The prayer vigil service was held on Sunday evening, June 17, 2012 from St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Basil Chomos officiating. The Lector was Erin Schroh. Tributes & Remembrances were given by Bill Hamilton, Denise Cooper and MaryAnn Scherr. Members of St. Gerard's Parish Choir led in the singing of the hymns "I Know That My Redeemer Lives", Psalm 62, and "Day is Done". Piper, Bruce Monette played "Amazing Grace". The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday morning, June 18 from St. Gerard's Church with Rev. Fathers Francis Hengen, Basil Chomos & Lorne Crozon Co-Celebrants. The Lectors were Tanner Schroh & Jennifer Herasymiuk. Lisa Monette led the Prayers of the Faithful, and Colleen Monette and Loretta Schroh were the Gift-bearers. Curtis Monette was the Crossberarer. Pianist, Carol Nagy led members of the Parish Choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns "This Day God Gives Me", Psalm 33, "Prayer of St. Francis", "Eye has Not Seen", "Song of the Angels", and "We Shall Go Out With Hope of Resurrection". Members of the Knights of Columbus, Council #2031 formed an honour guard at the church. Casketbearers were Bill Cooper, Greg Salyn, Bruce & Ryan Monette, and Dale and Justin Schroh. The interment will follow at a later date in the St. Joachim Roman Catholic Parish - Tisdale Cemetery at Â鶹ÊÓƵ Porcupine, ON. Condolences may be e-mailed to [email protected].
