Steve Elchuk, beloved husband of Lucy (nee Fullawka) Elchuk, of Yorkton and formerly of the Hamton district passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home in Yorkton, SK. He was 85 years of age. Steve was born on January 17, 1927, the son of George and Mary (nee Drobka) Elchuk in the Hamton district of SK. He received his education at the Federhill School. After completing his education, he worked at a steel plant in Hamilton, ON, eventually returning to Saskatchewan to farm with his Mother. Steve married Lucy Fullawka on July 21, 1949 at St. Joseph's Church in Canora, SK. Together they made their home and their living on the farm in the Hamton district. In 1984, they moved into Yorkton, but continued to farm until their retirement in 1987. Steve enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and travelling. They spent over 20 winters in Weslaco, Texas where they met many other "Winter Texans". Steve was predeceased by his father, George in 1939; his mother, Mary in 1970; his brother, Nick and his half-brothers, John, Mike and Ted Elchuk; his sisters, Nellie Gnyp and Margaret Elchuk and his brothers-in-law, Murray McDonald and Bill Bewley. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 63 years, Lucy of Yorkton, SK; his brother, Bill (Lee) of Edmonton; his sisters, Anne McDonald and Jean Bewley of ON and his sister-in-law, Kathy Elchuk of Weyburn, SK as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members. Steve is also survived by a favourite cousin, Frank Tomik of Regina, SK and a niece, Vicky Heshka of Melville, SK who were an important part of their family. The Prayer Service was held on Monday, August 6, 2012 from St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton, SK with Father Francis Hengen officiating. The pianist, Katherine Flaman, led the congregation and members of the St. Gerard's Music Ministry in the singing of the hymns, "Come Home", "Shelter Me, O God", "Psalm 63" and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand". The Reader was Tracy Dormer, the Cross Bearer was Kaylen Wiens and words of remembrance were shared by Jonatha Roste. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 from St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church with Father Francis Hengen serving as the Celebrant. The pianist, Rita Hilbig, led the congregation and members of St. Gerard's Music Ministry in the singing of the hymns, "How Great Thou Art", "Psalm 23", "Eye Has Not Seen", "Be Not Afraid" and "Amazing Grace". The Readers were Deb Wiens and Connie Heshka-Argue and the Cross Bearer was Nicole Argue. The Interment Service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Barry Elchuk, Ken Wiens, Frank Tomik, Brennan Wiens, Darren Palchewich and Trent Riffel serving as casket bearers.
