Dorothea Margaret Fookes Davis was born on the family farm in the Rhein district on November 12, 1937, the third of nine children, born to Alex and Martha (nee Waschenfelder) Fookes. She was raised and went to school in the Rhein district. On Valentine's Day in 1954, Dorothea had her first date with James "Jim" Davis and she knew he was the one! They were married in Yorkton in the old Anglican Church on July 20, 1956. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary this past summer and Dorothea still knew he was the one! True Love! On January 1957 they were blessed with their first child, Margaret followed by James, Jr. in 1958, Kathryn in 1960 and as if she wasn't busy enough, Hugh in 1969. Dorothea and Jim lived many places before settling in Bredenbury in 1962. There Dorothea became very involved in community activities such as being part of the ACW, curling, working tirelessly in the skating rink and sewing many carnival costumes. She was a person of many talents! She loved to sew, garden, decorate and cook. Making quilts became a passion and she spent many an afternoon quilting with her friends while she lived in Bredenbury. Every member of her family sleeps safely under a quilt, "made with tender loving care by Dorothea". She sewed many formal gowns making many brides and graduates look beautiful on their special day. Dorothea also loved to garden and she had a true "green thumb". Her produce was eaten at the family table and her flowers were enjoyed by everyone around her. In 1980, along with Hugh, Gerda and the cats, they moved to Esterhazy. Once settled there she became an active member of the Anglican Church and an avid bowler. Dorothea was very proud to be an IMC Manager's spouse and supported Jim in his job with intelligence and grace. They had a very full life together in Esterhazy. In 1993, Jim had the good fortune to be transferred to Port Maitland, ON, on the Niagara escarpment near Niagara falls, where he and Dorothea lived for the next three years. And their family felt very lucky to be able to visit them and tour one of the most beautiful places in Canada! Once retired they returned to Saskatchewan and moved to Canora Beach. All of their energy focussed on their home, which was beautiful, with a yard like a park! Being very kind and loving animals, Dorothea and Jim adopted many strays who needed help to survive. In 2004 they moved to Yorkton to be closer to family and friends. Again, the church was an integral part of their lives. They volunteered at the fair booth in the summer, worked at all of the church fundraising activities and Dorothea found a new love, singing in the choir! Dorothea suffered her first stroke this past October and even when her life got increasingly difficult she rarely complained and she always said she was "good". She was always appreciative for every visit and for even the smallest of things her family did for her - giving them her beautiful smile and a heartfelt "thank you" when they left. Dorothea was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Martha Fookes, her brothers, Arnold and Stanley and her brother-in-law, Paul Kraus. She leaves her husband, James to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, as well as her daughter, Margaret (Al) Amos, son, James (Cel) Davis, Jr., daughter, Kathryn (Robert) Brunskill and son, Hugh (Carla) Davis; eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Dorothea is also survived by her brothers, Kenneth, David and Donald and sisters, Iona, Marilyn and Sandra as well as many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Dorothea will be remembered for her intelligence, quick wit, great smile and laugh. She will be missed by everyone who had the great fortune to know and love her. God bless you all. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Yorkton, SK with Reverend Nancy Brunt officiating. The organist, Judy Berg, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art". Special taped music selections included, "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen and "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler. The urn bearers were Dorothea's sons, James Davis, Jr. and Hugh Davis. A private family cremation committal will take place at a later date. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting . Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie's Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
