SOPHIA CHANEY


Mrs. Sophia (Mohyla) Chaney of Yorkton entered eternal rest July 12, 2012 at St. Paul Lutheran Nursing Home in Melville. She was 101 years of age. Sophia was born on April 1, 1911 in the Goodeve district of SK, daughter of Jacob and Eva (Kozak) Mohyla. She was raised on the family farm and attended Nanton School. As a young girl she helped her parents on the family farm. Sophia married Albert in 1935 and they were blessed with two daughters, Cecile and Shirley. Before moving to Yorkton they farmed in the Saltcoats district for four years. Sophia worked at the Yorkton Union Hospital for fifteen years where she made many friends. Predeceased by her parents, husband Albert, daughter Cecile, brothers Mike and John, sisters Anne Fedyk, Katie Dobko, Rosie Staffen, Mary Lezon and Pearl Wengrowich. She is survived by her daughter Shirley (Darryle) Wheatcroft; grandchildren Bryan, Neil (Carmen), David, Karen (Jeffrey); great grandchildren Erika, Stefanie, Cassidy, Kyle and Scott; also many special nieces and nephews. Sophia had a special devotion to the Rosary and a great love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Prayers were held on Monday, July 16, 2012 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. The Holy Rosary led by the Blue Army preceded the prayers. John Panio led in the singing of the responses. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, July 17 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church with Rev. Father Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita & Parish Choir Members. The crossbearer was Erika Kornberger and the epistle reader was Bryan Kornberger. The interment followed in Yorkton City Cemetery with Bryan Kornberger, Neil Kornberger, Anton Fedyk, Devin Wengrowich, Ken Smuk and Brandyn Smuk serving as the casket bearers. A heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at St. Paul Lutheran Nursing Home in Melville for the very special care they gave to Sophia. Funeral arrangements were in care of Bailey's Funeral Home.
