PREECEVILLE — Their eyes have seen what the protected will never see, stated Bill Lesko, chairperson from the Legion.
“Nov. 11 fast approaches. We must take time to reflect on the past and show homage to all military veterans, past and present. Many gave the ultimate sacrifice and many more were wounded,” Lesko said.
When the call to arms came, Canadian citizens answered the call: the First World War, the Second World War, Korea, Afghanistan. They were all willing to put their lives on the line in order to protect their country, families, loved ones and the freedom we all enjoy.
Many Canadians take the freedom and prosperity they enjoy for granted. Thousands come to this land of plenty with no idea of the sacrifices others had to make to keep our free and democratic society.
Thirteen years of conflict in Afghanistan, fighting for those oppressed, has produced another wave of veterans. Many will require assistance in one form or another for many years to come.
The Royal Canadian Legion was formed in 1925 to help veterans. The need for veteran support continues today and there will always be a need as long as we continue to wage war or enter into conflicts to help those oppressed.
The Legion poppy campaign starts on Oct. 27. “Please donate generously to the campaign and wear your poppy proudly,” stated Lesko. “You are supporting your country by helping Canadian veterans who took up arms to protect Canada on your behalf.”
Preeceville Legion will be holding a Remembrance Day service at the Preeceville Community Legion Hall on Nov. 11 starting at 10:30 a.m. with a light lunch to follow.
