It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Pauline (Luciw) Urechko on August 4th, 2015 at the age of 88 years in Preeceville, SK. Pauline was born in the Hazel Dell district to John and Annie (Mateush) Luciw on February 10, 1927. Â
She was the fourth child of a family of 10 children and attended the Orange Vale Public School in the Municipality of Hazel Dell, SK. While growing up on the farm she willingly helped her parents and her siblings wherever she was needed. As a young girl she travelled to Flin Flon, MB to help one of her sisters care for her family.
While there she became employed at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company. There she met her future husband Bill Urechko whom she married in 1946. Pauline and Bill made their home in Flin Flon, MB for 56 years and had one son, Johnny. As their son Johnny grew older, Pauline got a job in the dining room in the local hospital which was run by the nuns.
During that time a position became available in the hospital supply room as an Assistant Buyer. Pauline applied and was successful in getting hired. Learning her work quickly she did very well. When the head buyer retired Pauline was promoted to the position where she remained until her retirement at the age of 60 years. In 1992, Pauline and Bill mourned the sudden loss of their only son Johnny at the age of 46 years.
Pauline was talented in many ways. She was a perfectionist in all she did. Her sewing, knitting, crocheting and her needlepoint embroidery were some of her favourite hobbies and she eagerly shared her creations with family and friends. She took great pride in her home, her garden, and her yard. One year Bill and Pauline received the award for the most beautiful yard in Flin Flon.
She was so happy with their accomplishment. She and Bill spent ten winters of their retirement in Yuma, Arizona enjoying the warm weather. As they grew older they discontinued going south. They enjoyed only one winter at home in Flin Flon as Bill passed away in 2001. A year later Pauline relocated to Preeceville, SK to be near her family.
Over the next number of years she was a godsend to her older siblings, helping them in any way she was able. As her health began to fail she spent the last few months in the hospital and care home. Pauline was predeceased by her husband Bill, son Johnny, parents John and Annie Luciw, brother and sisterinlaw Peter and Nettie Luciw, brother Steve Luciw, and inlaws Mike and Mary Urechko.
She leaves to mourn her loss her sisters, Stella Chalupiak of Preeceville, Mary Antonio of Calgary, Pearl Pasiechnik of Marysville B.C. and Carolle (Joseph) Pasiechnik of Canora, her brothers Mike (Violet) Luciw of Saskatoon, Bill (Hope) Luciw of Hazel Dell, Joe (Elsie) Luciw of Preeceville, sisterinlaw Jeannette Luciw, and brotherinlaw Peter (Marilyn) Urechko of Toronto.
She also leaves her two grandchildren Sherri Urechko of Toronto and Allan Urechko of Winnipeg, as well as her many nieces and nephews. Pauline will be dearly missed by all of us. A graveside service was held at the Rose Wood Cemetery in Brandon, MB on August 7, 2015. May she rest in peace.
