The Yorkton Regional High School in conjunction with The Good Spirit School Division hosted their first ever Gay-Straight Alliance Youth Summit Saturday. The opening ceremonies included welcoming remarks from Principal Mike Haczkewicz, and greetings on behalf of the city from Mayor Bob Maloney. Laura Budd spoke about the celebrations happening around the city and area during Yorkton Pride Week which has been proclaimed May 12 to 20 and the Diamond Willow Drum group performed two songs during the flag raising. The day consisted of workshops with speakers from fYrefly, OUT Saskatoon, and Moose Jaw Pride. The theme of the summit was titled 鈥楪rowing our Garden鈥 and was symbolic for the need of inclusion for all students within our schools. The impact of the summit was made clear by the students attending leaving remarks such as 鈥淚t was great to get so many like-minded people together in one place. What an excellent community,鈥 鈥淭his was an amazing learning experience for our students and teachers. It was so powerful and moving seeing so many students working towards making the world a more loving, accepting place.鈥Calvin Daniels
