SJFHL: Regina defeats Outlook to capture female hockey championship

Rebels finish an untold story from last season to seal the deal against the hosting Hawks.

OUTLOOK - In front of a raucous crowd at the Jim Kook Rec Plex in Outlook on Saturday afternoon, March 29, the final game of the season for the Saskatchewan Female Junior Hockey League saw two teams square off for the league's Bourgault Cup championship.

The hosting Outlook Mainline Ice Hawks were facing off with the Regina Rebels in Game Three of the Cup series, following two tense and momentum-shifting games played on March 21st and 23rd respectively, which saw Outlook take the first one in overtime at 4-3 and Regina answer right back in the second game at a score of 5-2.

Now, after a final blast of classic Saskatchewan wintertime caused the postponement of Game Three from Friday night until Saturday afternoon, the two rosters met to decide which team would take the league title.

The first period was something of a feeling-out chunk of time as both teams knew what the other could bring at any moment. Possession of the puck swayed back and forth and before fans knew it, the time had expired and the first twenty minutes of this contest had flown by.

It wasn't until just over halfway into the second period when goals started getting sunk into the net, as Regina was the first one on the scoreboard at 8:34 with a goal by #19 Piper Ast. Not to be outdone, Outlook got on the board just over five minutes later at the 3:19 mark with a power play goal by #22 Teanna Crossman. Things would return to a standstill for the remaining few minutes, meaning both teams would have to bring something different to the third and final twenty minutes of this championship affair.

The action returned to a standstill as both teams fought for control and possession for just over six minutes in the third until the Rebels returned to the scoreboard with a goal by #4 Victoria Mann at 13:30, inching her team ahead. Regina kept up the momentum for nearly eight minutes and moved even further ahead at 5:17 with a goal by #16 Nyah Lang on a power play. The Ice Hawks pulled their goalie in the hopes of their defense paying off, but it wasn't meant to be as on another power pay, Rebels #17 Brianna Westerman scored the final goal of the game on an empty Outlook net in the last 37 seconds.

As the season-ending buzzer sounded, Regina found themselves as league champions at a score of 4-1.

Fans cheered and applauded as the Rebels had completed a successful redemption story that began at the conclusion of last season when the Rebels previously played and were on the losing end of the final in 2024 against Saskatoon. With the victory on this day against Outlook, the championship win had to taste perhaps even sweeter.
