Surely, the Yorkton Terriers have captured your interest by now. They have won eight straight playoff games, ten straight overall if you date back to the regular season. They will not have home ice advantage in the Credit Union Cup final against La Ronge as the Ice Wolves had the better regular season record; but I wonder if the Terriers aren't the favorites here based on their 8-and-0 playoff mark as compared to La Ronge's 8-and-2.
Couple that with the fact the Terriers dusted off Kindersley by a combined score of 24-4 in the four games and it's tough not to be excited about the possibilities that could still lie ahead with this team.
I was involved in a conversation last week about hockey play-by-play announcers. CBC's Jim Hughson and TSN's Chris Cuthbert rank 1-2 and there is pretty much a consensus on that amongst hockey fans. There is a huge drop-off to number three, who might be NBC's Mike Emrick. Both CBC and TSN have regular play by play guys that I, personally, wouldn't hire to do SJHL games.
Speaking of which, GX94's Craig Stein is good enough to work in an NHL market. I hope he gets that chance. The man works harder than you can imagine.
The NBA is catching my interest like never before. I find myself growing increasingly tired of watching the NHL cheap shots on a nightly basis, so I've turned to something else and that something else is the NBA. The Oklahoma City Thunder are particularly exciting to watch with NBA leading scorer Kevin Durant and guard Russell Westbrook really playing an uptempo game.
When it's not sports, the PVR list includes Blue Bloods, Big Bang Theory, and Breakout Kings. Breakout Kings is a new show on A&E that is written by the same two guys that came up with Prison Break. A couple of weeks ago, they even brought back the T-Bag character that was made famous on Prison Break. It was a tremendous show and Robert Knepper is fantastic in that role. If you loved Prison Break, you will like Breakout Kings. There aren't as many twists and turns within one hour long episode, but it's good in its own way.
A federal election is on the horizon and last week's non-confidence vote in the minority Conservative Government has me wondering what Michael Ignatieff and Jack Layton were thinking. It must have been a real coin flip for them to go through with it because Ignatieff, should he sink any lower in the polls, is in danger of watching the Liberals become so unpopular with Canadians that Stephen Harper would be in a good position to secure a majority government if and when a federal election would be called. At the same time, Ignatieff and Layton are risking angering the public, who are tired of four elections in seven years, to the extent they vote Conservative just for the sake of ending minority governments.
The Yorkton-Melville constituency has been owned by Garry Breitkreuz since 1993 and he will probably win again even if he doesn't spend a nickel on promoting his own personal campaign. For me, I'd like to see the leaders of the Conservative Party really show some faith in Breitkreuz by installing him as a prominent cabinet minister. He has plenty of experience and it's time to see what he can do with a real important portfolio. This is assuming, of course, the Conservatives form government again.
From the 'I Can't Believe This File', Abercrombie & Fitch has come out with a bikini for seven year-olds that features a push up bra. Canadian mom blogger Nicole Christen feels unless a child actually needs a bra, anything that sexualizes girls at that young age is 'completely inappropriate' I couldn't agree more.
A little over a month from now, the calendar says it will be camping season. The calendar should look outside.
Popular music seems to run in cycles and I'm afraid grunge might be on the way back if what I saw at the Juno Awards on Sunday is any indication With all due respect to Meaghan Smith, the New Artist Of The Year should have been Bleeker Ridge. Maybe the rockers from Orillia, Ontario didn't qualify because they've been together since 2003. Or, maybe their September release date of Small Town Dead was too late in the year They have just the one album, so I think they should have taken home the honor.
