The spirit of Valentine's Day was evident in the atmosphere of the Yorkton Regional High School. S.A.D.D. ran a "Crush for your Crush" campaign during the days leading up the Valentine's Day. Student's could purchase a can of Crush soda and attach a note for their special someone. This can was then given to the students in either their period 5 or period 6 class. Some lucky students received upwards of 7 cans of soda. On the special day, the YRHS's new Social Activism club was selling candy bags in the hallway for an extra Valentine's Day treat.
On Wednesday, February 20 students from the YRHS left for the school's annual Europe Trip. This year the students and chaperones will be touring Germany. All the students remaining in Canada would like to wish these students a very enjoyable trip.
With Valentine's Day come and gone, the students of the Yorkton Regional High School are enjoyed what could very well be the last February break of their high school careers. The break may be eliminated to fit in with a changing schedule for future school years.
In future news, Yorkton Regional High School Band Students will be going to Banff, Alberta on Wednesday, February 27 for a retreat and clinic to help prepare for the hectic Musical Festival season in March.
This week in the Land of Orange, classes have resumed after spring break. Several students are attending "We Day" in Saskatoon on February 27. "We Day" is a movement to provide and promote education on social change, affiliated with "Free the Children". In 1995, 12 year old Craig Kielburger founded, "Free The Children". Craig read a newspaper article about a boy his age speaking out against child slavery. The life of the boy, from the article, was ended as he tried defending children's rights. After reading the article, Craig along with a small group of his peers, created "Free The Children" to liberate children from poverty and abuse. Today, "Free The Children" is an international movement and the YRHS decided to climb on board at the beginning of the school year. "We Day" features motivational speakers such as Martin Sheen, Molly Burke, Craig and Mark Kielburger, and Robin Wiszowaty. Performers including Shawn Desman, Hedley, and Karl Wolf are also featured on "We Day". More information on "We Day" is available on their website. We hope that the students attending "We Day" bring back more great ideas to help encourage social change in our school and community, as well as enjoy the speakers and performers.
