The Saskatchewan Roughriders don't cease to amaze do they? Only the Roughriders could get blown out of a game they should've won big in. Actually, I'll cut them some slack this past week and chalk up the lackluster effort to the short week as they only had four days off. In addition, it was a desperation game, of sorts, for the Edmonton Eskimos.
I don't mind seeing Kerry Joseph perform well at all. I have said it numerous times that I feel as though he got a raw deal in Saskatchewan after winning Most Outstanding Player and a Grey Cup with the Roughriders in 2007. He took his pay cut prior to the season and then went out and did the ultimate. Yet, his reward was being traded off to Toronto where they tried to make a square peg fit into a round hole. This year is proof positive the guy, likely, could have performed at a high level in the Saskatchewan offense for a number of years following the Grey Cup win.
I got an email from a former co-worker last week, saying I forgot to include Henry Burris above Darian Durant in the list of top CFL quarterbacks. I respect the opinion and the stats don't lie. Burris has put up some numbers this year. But, the Hamilton Tiger Cats are a bad team and if I had a choice of Durant or Burris for my football team, I'm taking Durant.
The best way to voice your displeasure about the NHL lockout is to make sure whenever they are back in business, you do not spend a single dime on this arrogant league. A number of years ago we used to hear about possible rival hockey leagues starting up. Remember the Global Hockey League? Where are they now? I'm willing to bet even an eight team league would do extremely well at this point.
For fans wanting to see exciting hockey, you really don't need to go far. The SJHL's Yorkton Terriers and Melville Millionaires met over the weekend and both of their games went to shootouts, with the home team winning each time, 4-3. It, simply, doesn't get any better than that. At this stage of the season, both the Terriers and Mils are the class of the Sherwood Conference and I can't see why these two clubs won't meet in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ final next March. Meanwhile, it's very unusual to see the Weyburn Red Wings at the bottom of the division. They are 2-and-9, losers of six straight, and have given up 57 goals in eleven games this season.
As far as TV sports goes, the Major League Baseball playoffs have had a tremendous amount of drama. So, you really can't say you are missing the NHL can you?
I had a pretty good chuckle on Monday afternoon as I spotted a police cruiser hiding in the parking lot of the Cornerstone Credit Union trying to pick off motorists who fail to obey the stop sign behind the RBC. It was a holiday so it wasn't as though there was a heavy amount of traffic going through there. Meanwhile, as I make my way down Broadway Street West, I witnessed back to back crosswalks where pedestrians were almost killed by motorists failing to yield the right of way. Is there something wrong with this picture?
The Amanda Todd tragedy has drawn an impassioned response to bullying. If you really want to get serious on bullying, prosecute the perpetrators and charge them with murder. Even if you are not successful, I think a potential bully might think twice about his/her actions. We live in a day and age now where bullying can take on so many different forms. Forget stealing lunch money. With cell phones, Facebook, online video games, and other technological means to access someone; there can be no escape outlet for those who get bullied. I am, probably, in the minority on this one; but I have told my kids that if they are being bullied, they have every right to stand up for themselves, even if it means getting physical. I am one parent that will not tolerate it under any circumstance. Unfortunately, I was bullied early in life and, not proud to now admit, did some bullying of my own later in life. I feel the only way to put an end to bullying is to push back twice as hard as the original push.
The difference between Canada's justice system and that of the United States is exemplified when you look at the sentences handed down to Graham James and Jerry Sandusky, respectively.
Something to consider when putting money down on trying to become the next multi-millionaire: The chance of dying on the way to buy a lotto ticket is higher than you winning.
And, here's another something to consider when you think of that particular person in your life that you do not particularly like: "Having resentment against someone is like drinking poison and thinking it will kill your enemy." That phrase is attributed to Nelson Mandela.
Nice person mentions to Shirley Prokop, Brendan Wagner, Del Lavineway, Jeannette Haubrich, and Jill Kirk.
