Gay activists are up in arms after hearing Russia issue a warning to homosexuals to 'obey the law' in Sochi in 2014. You see, Russia recently passed a law that punishes the dissemination of information about homosexuality to minors but which activists say can be used for a broad crackdown against gays. I've long said to visitors of Canada that if you don't like our rules, you are free to go to another country. Well, the same applies to Russia. You don't have to agree with how they do things, but you do have to respect what is the law where they live. So if you are a gay athlete, you are welcome to compete and enjoy the country. You are not welcome to hold a parade or influence a minor. That's really all this is saying. And, if you have a problem with that then, I guess, you should stay home. I don't know what the fuss is anyway. When was the last time you saw a homosexual Olympic athlete use the games as a vehicle to promote sexual orientation? Oh, by the way, if you feel that strongly about promoting sexual orientation, the offense is punishable by way of a $156 fine and possible, but not likely, two weeks in jail. It's a speeding ticket folks. So, relax. Canada can learn something from this. No, not by passing anti-homosexual laws; but being more pro-active when it comes to letting foreigners know what is and what isn't acceptable in our country long before anyone arrives. Come to think of it, anything goes in Canada now. It might be too late. I've said a few times our country's motto should be, "Welcome to Canada, Where We Change For You".
I love animals. I have grown up with them ever since I was a little boy. We, presently, have three cats that are twice as old as our children and we also have a dog that is 2 ½. Heck, a guinea pig even lives in the house during the summer (it lives at school the other ten months of the year). Pets really are family members. But, how can you explain the need for a human being to keep a snake or a killer fish or a lizard or some other living thing that doesn't belong in a home with people? To me, there is something wrong with a person who enjoys feeding small animals to their pet for enjoyment, but there is a market for it and over the weekend two little boys (aged 5 & 7) met their end in a most tragic way when a python escaped from a pet store in Campbellton, New Brunswick. Such a needless, sad, horrible thing to happen. But, hey....someone somewhere just wouldn't be complete by having a German Shepherd. No. Gotta have a snake.
Baseball fans have, surely, seen the Catch Of The Year by now. Anaheim outfielder JB Shuck stole a home run away from Jose Bautista last week by leaping high into the air, snagging the ball and then falling over the other side of the fence and into the crowd. It was a terrific display of athleticism. But, I have a different take. If the player who catches the ball can't stay within the field of play, shouldn't it still be a home run?
Only in Major League Baseball could a player be suspended for 211 games and on the very same day as the punishment be handed down he also make his season debut (see Alex Rodriguez).
It's Monday evening and I just finished watching the BC Lions defeat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. A couple of thoughts come immediately to mind: I've heard a few Rider haters out there claim that the cinderella season will be all over once they tangle with the ferocious Lions. Well, after watching BC for the last two weeks, I would say Saskatchewan will take its chances. And, I can't believe Winnipeg fired Paul LaPolice in favor of the nonsense that runs their on-field product at the present time. Who hires LaPolice first? Edmonton? Or, Saskatchewan? Yes, I think he could end up being the head coach here because Corey Chamblin isn't long term. He's way too good to not be in the NFL someday soon.
Long time Fox FM listeners will remember former morning man Alex White. Well, he's now an aspiring rock musician and he, recently, made a stop in Yorkton and dropped off some CDs and t-shirts to promote his new band Legba's Mojo. I can't recall the reasoning for that moniker, but I'm sure in typical Alex fashion, there is a good story behind it. You can check out some song samples on iTunes. I believe his band is making a Yorkton stop in the Fall.
I travel the province frequently, so I think I am qualified to say Kipling is one of the best small communities in Saskatchewan. It's a thriving little town with a real welcoming spirit. The support shown for the first ever Bobby Vargo Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament over the weekend was amazing.
