A new monthly column will be launching in Yorkton This Week, dealing with the importance of food security.
The articles will be authored by members Assiniboine Food Security Alliance.
"It will be a collaborative issue," said group spokesperson Warren Crossman. "It will be connected in some way to food security." He said the articles will look beyond just AFSA activities, but food security "will be our theme."
Crossman said since it will be members penning the articles, it stands to reason often "it will focus on some aspect related to what AFSA does."
As a result the inaugural article, appearing in this week's edition, provides a basic overview of what AFSA is about. The group's mission statement defines it well.
"Providing practical, learning opportunities enabling people to access and consume food appropriate for a healthy life."
In addition the group advocates on food issues, creates opportunities for education to learn practical skills in growing food, food preparation, food storage, nutrition and eating responsibly, build community awareness and build capacity within the community in terms of food security.
The second article is already in the works for late February, said Crossman, noting it will be written by Heather Torrie, who will chair the Third Annual Prairie Sun Seed Festival. The column will outline the Festival, which will be held at Yorkdale Central School Saturday, Feb. 23, in greater detail.
The Festival will include three workshops, as well as a seed exchange, food preservation demonstrations, and seed sellers.
"It's our attempt to put into practical terms what people can do," he said.
Future articles will include looks at local initiatives such as the Community Garden Alliance, the fruit share program Grow 'n' Share.
Crossman said the articles will also look beyond local at times to highlight events such as Earth Day in April, and World Food Day, held each fall.
Crossman said while the monthly articles are a way to share information, he said they hope it spurs discourse within the community. He said if people have ideas they think AFSA could help with, they are certainly open to discuss them.
