I haven't had a chance to comment, so this may be a little old; but feel as though I should throw my own two cents in anyway with regards to the Head Start Homes project. It does appear as though some people think we can just stop growth whenever we want. We can't. Yorkton is growing whether you like it or not. If you don't like it, move to Springside or Willowbrook or something. Secondly, you do not have a right to choose who your neighbors will be. If the family next door makes $100,000 less than you, well that's just too bad if you can't get over yourself. Frankly, I can't understand some of the people living in the upper class homes in Yorkton are getting by. It's not like there are a lot of executive positions available for employment around here. In my mind, I'm thinking there are a few living beyond their means and their world is going to come crashing down at some point. So, maybe you could ask your new 'poor' neighbor how they are able to get by on such limited means; and that could blossom into a wonderful friendship.
Now, having said that there is some warranted concern about the types of people who might be moving into your neighborhood. There is nothing worse than having a family move in next to you that litters their yard with trash, engages in domestic violence on a monthly basis, invades your personal property uninvited, or conducts illegal activity. You can say what you want, but the reality is that an upper class family is a lot less likely to come with this baggage than that of a lower class family. It is those types of families that give lower class families a bad name. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it's a duck. You can't profile people like this anymore, but if you could, I'd be willing to bet that nine out of the top ten criminals that reside in the Yorkton area come from so-called lower class families.
We were at the hospital in Dauphin over the weekend to visit my wife's 92-year-old grandmother, who was recovering from a bout of pneumonia. With all due respect to the great people that keep our health care system together, I feel it is necessary to mention how embarrassed we should be to walk into a hospital that is outfitted worse than what a provincial or federal jail would be. The mouse trap as soon as you walk in the door should have been the giveaway that I wasn't going to see much that would make me feel endeared while I was there. I know times are tough and purse strings are tight, but when spending government dollars, I think upgrading our health care facilities should come before we upgrade things in the prison system. If jailbirds were forced to deal with outdated television sets, beds that are fifty years old, broken toilets, gross sinks, and no suitable chairs for the visitors all at the expense of sick people who need health care well, I have to say I'm okay with that. And, so should you be.
Similar tragedies last week, one in Prince Albert and the other in Connecticut. In Prince Albert, a 63-year-old man was hunting with his 36-year-old son when, somehow, the father shot the son and killed him. Not much else is known other than that police are investigating. In Connecticut, a man shot a knife wielding masked prowler; only to realize afterward he had shot and killed his own son. Questions will remain forever as to what the 15-year-old boy was doing.
It wasn't that long ago I called for the Saskatchewan Roughriders to take a look at Drew Willy as their quarterback. Darian Durant was in the midst of quarterbacking (I'll use that term loosely) a team through five straight losses where the team was producing pretty much nothing offensively. Well, Durant got injured and Willy got into a couple of games and acquitted himself quite well. However, it was evident to anybody attending games that after watching both quarterbacks, the issue isn't so much Durant not getting the ball to the receivers, but rather the receivers not getting open for their quarterback to pass the ball. In games, such as the BC one last weekend, where Weston Dressler can shake off the extra attention; the Riders can be successful. However, I suspect the loss of Jock Sanders is going to be huge for this football team.
Is it a good comment on Durant or a bad comment on the CFL when you say Durant is the third best quarterback in the CFL? If you don' t agree, name a pivot you would like to see at the helm of the Roughriders other than Anthony Calvillo or Travis Lulay.
