The unusual story of the dogs in Springside, who survived on their dead owners' remains is one that generated an amazingly wide array of opinions. Personally, I think the right thing happened here. The dogs were adopted out to loving homes. Just because the dogs' sense of survival kicked in and they ate the only form of meat they could, they shouldn't be penalized for it. Nor, should we assume the dogs will, all of a sudden, develop a sudden affection for human meat. I remember the movie 'Alive', which was based on the true story of a Uruguay rugby team that was on an airplane that crashed in the Andes. The survivors were stranded for over two months before being rescued.
To survive, they had to eat human remains. I assume they never had an appetite for it ever again.
The dogs will be no different, in my opinion.
Everyone, myself included, has an opinion on the Saskatchewan Roughriders and their 0-and-3 start. From where I sit, I see a team that is not ready to play. It's easy to throw the coaches under the bus, but I'm not going to do that. I think what has happened is that this is a roster that is used to playing for a laid back coach (Ken Miller) and doesn't take too kindly to someone coming in with a bigger bark (Greg Marshall) in order to get the message across. The bottom line is that this group was 0-for-2 in Grey Cups and changes need to be made. Furthermore, it doesn't appear as though the proper scouting work has been done to replace those that have left. One thing you can say about Eric Tillman is that he always made sure there was more than enough talent on the roster. What I see is a team scrambling to field a competitive team when some of its regulars go down. The bottom line is that you are what your record says you are, and this team is brutal. Don't be surprised to see them 0-and-4 by this time next week, but I am predicting a win over Calgary on July 30.
Fans shouldn't put up with this kind of poor play either. They should stop buying $6 beer and all the merchandise that has been gobbled up in recent years to protest this nonsense. The Roughriders have more money at their disposal than any other CFL team, so while I don't expect them to win every single year; I do expect them to be an awful lot better than 0-and-3 and blown out of every single game. Fans who preach about there being a cap are barking up the wrong tree.
Caps are meant to be circumvented. Find a way to do it. Get some real players in here and entertain the heck out of us. If I'm going to make the effort to drive two hours each way to watch this cast of characters, the least they can do is try. That includes the players on the field and the suits in the office who are in charge of putting the players on the field.
I can't imagine how inept the Riders have been over the years when I see Darian Durant is the 4th most prolific quarterback ever to wear a jersey for this team. And, Wes Cates is now the 2nd most productive running back. Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan. But, I'm a demanding one. Do you think New York Yankee fans would put up with a last place team? They don't even like a second place one.
For ten months of the year, I won't pick up a book to read. However, during the summer I will do a lot of reading while enjoying the comfort of camping at the lake. I've moved on to Ozzy Osbourne's autobiography (I will be lending it to Kevin Lukey of Cornerstone Credit Union when I'm finished), and have found myself, literally, in tears laughing in disbelief at the life this man has been living.
My wife doesn't share my enthusiasm. She's debating having me read the book away from the camp site. Oh well, small things amuse small minds.
How powerful has Twitter become? Sarah Jessica Parker just reached 100,000 followers over the weekend and she hasn't tweeted (I hate that term) even one time.
Here's a scary thought: By age two, 92% of children have an internet presence. 6% have social networking accounts! This is according to a recent study. Here's another study from Northwestern University: people who sleep in will eat more calories and make unhealthier food choices.
Last week, I mentioned a new flavor of potato chips and I have yet another this week: Macaroni and Cheese. I can't imagine them being any good; but who knows. To my knowledge, I think they are only available in the United States.
Nice person mentions to Jeff Sedor, Trevor Secundiak, Wayne Henley, and Loretta Nelson.
