Dear Editor:
The reality of violence is that it affects everyone. Violence knows no boundaries. Violence does not discriminate and those of all ages, races and classes may be the victims. One out of every four Canadian women suffers from abuse at the hands of a partner (Statistics Canada, 1994). In order to understand the enormity of this reality, keep in mind that every fourth house on your street represents a home where violence is occurring.
What is Abuse?
Abuse is the intent of one individual to control the behaviour of another through actual/threatened actions without any concern for their rights.
Abuse can take many forms such as:
Any act or words that hurt
Emotional
Physical
Sexual
Financial
Spiritual
Psychological
Abuse hurts the entire family unit. Children who witness abuse are deeply affected by what they see. Children who suffer emotional or physical abuse because of family violence and partner abuse are considered abused children.
If we wish to become a society with zero tolerance to violence; we must promote the fact that violence is never acceptable.
The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is December 6. This day marks the anniversary of the 1989 Montreal Massacre where 14 women were senselessly murdered. Far from being an isolated incident, this horrendous act verifies the fact that violence against women is pervasive throughout Canada.
On December 6, 2011 we will commemorate the death of these fourteen women while remembering the violence that many endure on a daily basis. A Candlelight Vigil will be held at 7:00 pm at SIGN on Broadway in Yorkton. Refreshments and dainties will be served and there is no cost to attend. Everyone is welcome.
