Dear Editor:
The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce was surprised by the results of the website poll conducted by Yorkton This Week that asked if your readers thought it was a good decision by Yorkton Council to set its 2013 Capital Budget so early. Approximately 53% of respondents said no.
In contrast, the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce thinks it is a good idea that the Capital budget was passed so early. By doing so, it enables the various city departments to create their specs for future projects in a timely manner which in turn allows them to call for tenders for those projects earlier. With a longer time line available for the submission of tenders, it's expected that more tenders will be received, thereby increasing the competition.
The Yorkton Chamber commends the city's Administration for preparing the Capital Budget well in advance of the new fiscal year and the Council for approving it.
The Chamber does suggest that in future, the Council consider not passing the budget in the meeting at which it is first presented. Waiting one meeting before final reading enables the public to review and react to the proposed budget prior to its passing.
Sincerely,
Ron Irvine
President
