Dear Editor:

Kudos to Terri Lefebvre Prince, Heritage Researcher, City of Yorkton. Terri has researched, written and corrected much of the past history of Yorkton.

Her articles in the Yorkton This Week are great to read and I have heard many good comments.

I was a member of the Heritage Advisory Sub-Commission from 1994-2002.The Commission is under the supervision of the Leisure Service Department. In June of 1997 Terri was hired part time for 3 months as Heritage Researcher by the city under a grant program. She worked part time off and on until 2001 and then became full time.

The work was: the history of Yorkton that is - Yorkton proper, and immediate vicinity. Not the detailed settlement of the region. She soon discovered that Yorkton's history is not well known by the public. Its origins with the founding York Colonization Company had received little press in articles of the recent past and various publications. Most publications usually had a one liner about the founding company, and York settlers if at all mentioned, or ever given credit for their contribution. There were serious omissions and errors in some history books. .

She researched and wrote several books of Yorkton's colourful history.

Cemetery Walking Tour; The Whiskey Man (Balmoral Hotel Bronfman Saga);

A Tour and Reminiscence of The Old Town Centre of Yorkton; Windows on our History, The Centennial of the Province in 2005.

If you are interested in the history of Yorkton, these books are a real treasure to read. You can purchase these books at City Hall.

Thanks again Terri for straightening out our history for the past 130 years-especially the first 30-40 years. The best thing we did while I was on the committee was to hire you!

Sheila Harris
Past Chairperson
Heritage Sub Commission
