Anyone who thinks global warming is a figment of some tree hugger's imagination should just try to remember what Saskatchewan weather was like ten years ago. I know I don't recall the heavy rain and wind storms that we seem to get on a regular basis now. You don't have to call it global warming, but you should concur that the weather is changing over time and Saskatchewan is becoming more and more susceptible to extreme weather.
Is it just me or are there too many storm chasers now? We've become over saturated with them. And, this is a dangerous profession/hobby. I am amazed at what I see out there in people and vehicles who call themselves storm chasers. They must have a death wish.
I admit to being big time interested in a tornado just like the next guy and I'd love to have a huge adrenaline rush of being in the middle of something; but the only way I'm doing it is inside Dominator 3 with Reed Timmer and Sean Schofer of TVN. These other folks who have minimal training and are getting up close in regular cars and trucks are nuts.
The world gets creepier by the day. A man has been found dead in his pick-up truck along Circle Drive in Saskatoon. You might expect to find a guy murdered along a Mexican road, but in Saskatoon? The good news is that arrests have been made and court appearances have already been scheduled for this week.
If you are a frequent reader of my column, you will know that I love attending rock music concerts and Shinedown is one of my favorite bands. Last week, they opened for Kiss in Saskatoon and I declined going because Shinedown was, merely, an opening act and would play for no more than 40 minutes before giving way to Kiss and their two hour-plus long show.
I've never been a fan of Kiss. I can stomach a couple of dozen songs but that's really not that many when you factor in the hundreds and hundreds they have released.
Kiss is the one band I've never been able to understand why so many males have, openly, admitted to being such a huge fan. Think about it. Platform shoes, loads of make-up, a guy who sticks his tongue out (seductively, if there is such a way to stick out your tongue), the riffs are fairly tame when put up against other hard rock acts that are popular with males (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, etc.) and the overall packaging of the band is, incredibly, fake.
Now, I'm not making fun or saying they aren't talented. But, what I am saying is that I don't understand how a rock music fan can claim to be a fan of Kiss but then turn around and discredit a group like Poison or Warrant or Winger or any of those other hair band genre groups; but you will find some night sitting around a campfire that a 40 year old man will, proudly, put on some Kiss for everyone to listen to and then when he's in the mood for White Lion, he makes sure it's with his headphones and nobody else around in case he gets made fun of. To me, it's one and the same.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are for real. They opened the season with a win in Edmonton (never an easy place for the Riders to play even when the Esks are a little weak), then defeated a pretty good Calgary team at home, and on Thursday they handled the defending Grey Cup champs on the road. Now, they have back to back games with Kent Austin's Hamilton Ti-Cats, who have struggled with a 1-and-2 record. The Ti-Cats have 27 new players so Austin is in a full rebuild with his new team.
I was one of the people who applauded the trade to acquire Geroy Simon from BC and while I think he will still pay a dividend or two this season, it's clear the BC Lions were not dumb for dealing him. As long as Corey Chamblin isn't banking on him, Simon will be a nice addition whenever he can get into the line-up.
Nice person mentions this week to Gladys Secondiak, Stephanie Hudye, Joshua Shaw, Karen Betger, and Daniele Bourhis.
